Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu (Drive & Afternoon Game Drive)

  • 6:00 AM – Departure from Nairobi:
Begin your adventure early in the morning as you leave Nairobi. Your guide will meet you at your accommodation or the designated pickup point, and you’ll begin the scenic drive to Samburu. The journey takes approximately 6-8 hours, depending on the route and road conditions. As you leave Nairobi, you’ll drive through the bustling towns of Thika and Nanyuki, before entering the picturesque Central Highlands region, known for its rolling hills and views of Mount Kenya.
  • 9:00 AM – Stop for a Refreshing Break:
Around mid-morning, you’ll make a quick stop at Nanyuki or Nakuru, where you can stretch your legs, enjoy a light snack, and grab a coffee before continuing the journey.
  • 12:30 PM – Arrival at Samburu:
Upon arrival at your lodge or camp in Samburu, you will check in and enjoy a delicious lunch at the camp. Choose from a variety of luxurious lodges or eco-friendly camps like Samburu Intrepids, Saruni Samburu, or Samburu Sopa Lodge, each offering comfortable accommodations and stunning views.
  • 2:30 PM – Afternoon Game Drive in Samburu National Reserve:
After lunch, embark on your first game drive in the Samburu National Reserve. This reserve is famous for its unique wildlife, including the Samburu Special Five: the Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, and gerenuk antelope. You’ll also have the chance to spot lions, elephants, cheetahs, giraffes, and buffaloes. This is the perfect time to see wildlife in action as many animals are active in the afternoon.
  • 5:30 PM – Return to Lodge for Dinner:
After a fulfilling game drive, head back to your accommodation. Dinner will be served at your lodge or camp, where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the African bush.
  • 7:30 PM – Evening Relaxation:
Some lodges offer a sundowner experience where you can enjoy drinks while watching the sunset. Afterward, sit around the campfire (if available) to hear stories about the area’s wildlife and culture.
  • Overnight: Stay at your lodge or tented camp.

Day 2: Full Day in Samburu (Game Drives, Nature Walk, and Cultural Experience)

Start the day early with a sunrise game drive. This early morning outing is when wildlife is at its most active, and you’ll have the opportunity to spot predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs. The cooler temperatures during these hours also make it easier to observe animals such as elephants, buffalo, and gazelles.

After your morning safari, head back to your lodge for a hearty breakfast to recharge.
  • 10:30 AM – Nature Walk or Additional Game Drive:
After breakfast, you can either go on another game drive or take a nature walk with a local guide to learn about the flora, fauna, and ecological aspects of the Samburu region. The walk offers insight into the smaller creatures and plants that make up the Samburu ecosystem. Some camps also offer the chance to explore the area on horseback, adding a unique perspective to your safari.
  • 1:00 PM – Lunch at the Lodge:
Enjoy a delicious lunch back at your lodge, where you can share stories from the morning’s safari with fellow travelers.
  • 3:00 PM – Visit to a Samburu Village:

The Samburu are known for their distinctive dress, jewelry, and customs. During your visit, you’ll learn about their daily life, traditional dances, and the importance of livestock in their society. You may even have the chance to take part in a cultural activity or watch a traditional dance performance.
  • 5:00 PM – Evening Game Drive or Relaxation:
Return to the reserve for another short game drive or relax back at your lodge. Many lodges offer spa services where you can unwind after a day of adventure.
