Introduction
Rimoi National Reserve, located deep within Elgeyo-Marakwet County, is one of Kenya’s best-kept safari secrets. Nestled in the dramatic Kerio Valley, Rimoi National Reserve offers untouched wilderness, breathtaking escarpments, and herds of majestic elephants that roam freely across golden plains. Though often overshadowed by larger parks, this reserve rewards travelers with solitude, raw beauty, and unforgettable adventure.
Our three-day road trip with the Nakuru Motors Club in partnership with packwego africa turned into a journey of laughter, courage, and discovery — a perfect escape into the wild heart of Kenya.

Day 1: The Road to Sambalat
Our Rimoi National Reserve safari began on a crisp morning as our convoy rolled out with the Nakuru Motors Club. Excitement filled the air, though we briefly lost one of our friends along the way — only for him to reappear at Sambalat, grinning as though it had all been part of the plan.
The road snaked through small towns where locals were panning for gold in the Kerio Valley — their hands shimmering with dust and determination. A quiet Catholic Church at Wewo stood watch on a sunlit hill, surrounded by curious children. We stopped to share biscuits and sweets, their smiles brightening the valley morning.

The route turned rough and winding — a road locals call “the most dangerous in Kenya” — before revealing the tranquil expanse of the Kerio Valley below. That night, we reached Gorge View Bush Retreat, one of the best places to stay near Rimoi National Reserve, and shared stories under a sky glittering with stars.

Day 2: Into the Wild Heart of Rimoi National Reserve
After a hearty breakfast, we drove toward Rimoi National Reserve, pausing at the twin peaks of Matiti Mbili — two striking hills that rise like sentinels above the valley. Our ranger guide greeted us warmly and later treated us to a delicious bush barbecue.
Inside Rimoi National Reserve, nature unfolded in spectacular fashion. Hundreds of elephants — nearly six hundred according to our guide — moved gracefully through the golden savannah. Their peaceful presence was mesmerizing. While we stayed inside the 4×4, our ranger confidently walked among them, calm and unshaken.
That night, the sounds of trumpeting elephants echoed through the valley as we relaxed back at Gorge View Bush Retreat. It was the perfect Rimoi safari evening — one that reminded us of nature’s quiet power and beauty.

Day 3: Gorges, Markets, and Farewells
Our final morning took us through the highlands of Iten, where thin air and vast horizons met at Cheploch Gorge. We stood on the cliff’s edge, watching daring young divers leap into the roaring Kerio River below — a thrilling display of courage that matched the spirit of Rimoi itself.

On our return journey, we stopped in Kabarnet, gazing from a single viewpoint where both Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo shimmered under the sun. At Koriema Market, the irresistible aroma of roasted goat meat and fresh local honey filled the air. We lingered there, savoring the flavors of the Rift Valley one last time.
By the time we reached the Shell Petrol Station, shoes dusty and hearts full, we knew this was more than a safari. Rimoi National Reserve had given us a story — one of adventure, friendship, and the wild beauty that still defines Kenya.
