Packwego engages in Volunteer Tourism in collaboration with Nomuhub Organization

Volunteer work is something that’s always been close to my heart. I’ve had the privilege to live a comfortable life. But coming from Africa I feel the need to take responsibility to bring change and have an impact on the local people’s lives.

So when an opportunity came knocking with Nomuhub organization; I was happy to collaborate and make a memorable Volunteer Tourism project.

Nomuhub is a Social Enterprise that’s focused on providing impactful volunteering experiences while offering rich travel encounters for travelers. They partner with schools, businesses & organizations with an aim to help them achieve their Corporate Social Responsibility Goals towards their communities. All their projects are centered around their mantra; “Travel with purpose”.

The Head of NomuHub reached out to us with a proposal to build classes for a local community in Ng’ambo Nakuru while they enjoy the beautiful sceneries that Nakuru brings. It was the perfect project.

Giving back to the local community while promoting tourism concurrently was literally throwing 2 strikes with one pitch. This is how you build ventures with real impact.

After countless preparations and organizing, the Nomuhub team and their travelers made it to Kenya. I was ecstatic. Finally this project had unraveled. The first day was all about setting things up and guiding the team on the planned project.

Everything was set. It was time to get to work.

And so the next few days had the team, construction workers, and the students of Kigonor Primary School working in collaboration to build 2 classes.

I had the Nomuhub team and their travelers staying at self-catering homes in Milimani with the best views of Lake Nakuru.

A typical day had us arriving at Kigonor Primary School by 8am, take tea or coffee during breaks, and visit various sceneries in Nakuru after lunch such as tea zones, coffee zones and lake parks.

The travelers had remarkable experiences participating in the construction and working together with the students. From mixing concrete to pushing wheelbarrows; they did it all. Every day was a chance to make significant difference one brick at a time.

On the weekends, we’d spend doing Safaris to various destinations.

In a span of 2 weeks the construction of the 2 classes was done. This was such an impactful project as the travelers made some real difference in people’s lives while enjoying unique travel experiences.

We ended the tour with style at Sarova Woodlands and wrapped it up at the Maasai Mara.

Volunteer Tourism is one of the best ways to improve the economic stability of local communities. This is something that we’re passionate about at Packwego Africa. Changing lives and building impact is how we give back to the community.
